How To Become Part Of Our Duty Crew?

Duty Crew Job Responsibilities

POSITION OBJECTIVES:

  • Protects life and property while performing firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and other duties, as assigned.  Duty crew personnel maintain fire/ ems equipment, apparatus, and facilities.  Duty crewmembers work under the supervision of the duty crew supervisor. 

JOB DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES:

  • Responds as dispatched within the Porter Fire District and on mutual aid assignments.
  • Provides EMS treatment in accordance with Texas Laws, M.C.H.D protocols, and station direction.
  • Performs firefighting activities including:  driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment, extinguishment and overhaul tasks.
  • Writes and complete reports accurately and in a timely manner, documenting incident data, patient assessment, and patient treatment.  Complies with department Operations Manual & SOG’s. 
  • Operates radio and other communication equipment in accordance to the M.F.C.A. protocols.
  • Participates in the inspection of businesses, buildings, hydrant inspections, residential locations, and other structures in suppression pre-plan programs.
  • Performs minor repairs to fire district equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire/ ems station facilities and equipment. 
  • Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and EMS activities.
  • Presents programs to the community/ fire district on safety, medical, and fire prevention/suppression topics.
  • Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Maintains required certifications in fire suppression and Texas Dept of Health certifications. 
  • Meets fire district continuing education requirements.
  • Maintains positive working relationship with the public and other Porter Fire Department members.

 FIREFIGHTER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of employment.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possess current Texas State TDH-EMT /ECA certification.
  • HazMat/First Responder Operations Qualified.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Texas class B driver’s license.
  • Must at a minimum have achieved a basic level of certification by the Texas Commission on fire protection. 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of:
    • Fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
    • Emergency medical and resuscitation techniques and their application.
    • Skill in the operation of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to:
    • Apply standard firefighting and emergency medical techniques to specific situations.
    • To follow verbal and written instructions by superiors.
    • Handle stressful situations.               
    • Handle all physical requirements of the job.
    • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Establish effective working relationships with members, other agencies and the public.
    • Perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergency or training activities for prolonged
    • Periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.
    • Complete required written documentation/ reports.

At the present time their are no fire fighter positions available with the fire department.

How To Become A Volunteer?

 Applying to the Porter Fire Department for a volunteer position is the same as applying for a paid position.

Minimum requirements are:

            18 years of age
            Possess a high school diploma of GED Equivalent
            Clean Driving Record
            No Criminal history

All applicants will fill out a MCESD # 6 employment application(link).  All sections must be filled out including references and the criminal history background form.  Please ensure all forms are signed and witnessed where asked.  Applicants should make copies of their driver’s licenses and any other pertinent certifications and attach them to the forms.  Applications should then be submitted to Administrative Offices located at 23550 Loop 494, Porter, TX 77365.  Please do not fax or send by email. 

Once the application has been received we will review the application, send off the criminal history background check, and contact references.  This process can take several days or even weeks at times.  Successful candidates will be put in contact with a Field Training Officer for Department orientation.  Volunteers are encouraged to attend all departmental functions but cannot ride out on fire trucks until they complete a 70 hour introductory course in firefighting. 

Volunteers are required to respond from the station in designated fire apparatus.  Montgomery County ESD # 6 does not allow volunteers to respond directly to incidents in their personal vehicles, nor do we allow volunteers to place lights and sirens on their personal vehicle or run emergency traffic at any time in private vehicles.   

 
All applicants can be subjected to periodic and random drug screening.

All applicants will be subjected to a physical agility exam.
