Porter Fire Department is seeking applications for the position of Lieutenant! Internal and External applicants are welcome to apply!
THE PORTER FIRE DEPARTMENT
Is in southeast Montgomery County, Texas located northeast of Houston, near Interstate 69 and the Grand Parkway. MCESD6 was originally the Porter Volunteer Fire Department founded in 1962. The department is a fully paid all-hazard fire department currently with 84 employees of which 77 are assigned to suppression working in five (5) heavy companies out of four fire stations. Suppression works on a 48/96 schedule. Currently oneadditional fire station is in development with additional department growth planned. https://www.porterfire.com/
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Responds to emergencies, determines the route and directs firefighting and other emergency work until relieved
• Receives assignments and supervision from senior officers, following chain of command (such assignments require little or no supervision)
• During absence of senior officer, position may be assigned additional fire department duties and responsibilities
• Supervises size-up, rescue, exposure, suppression, overhaul and salvage operations, emergency medical services and other related emergency activities
• Instructs the principles and practices of firefighting, fire prevention, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and other related subjects
• Conducts fire safety education classes to public and businesses
• Prepares records and reports regarding incidents, supplies, personnel and other matters pertaining to the fire stations and equipment
• Assists in annual performance evaluations, coaches and disciplines within the guidelines and practices of the department
• Supervises annual testing and maintenance of equipment and apparatus
• Represents the fire department at meetings and other activities, works with other personnel and the public to accomplish the goals and objectives necessary to complete the mission of the department
• Evaluates department’s training needs and works with training officer
• Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all department equipment, apparatus, fire department rules, regulations, and policies and procedures
• Works well with the public
• Make recommendations to the Captain to better enhance department’s operating procedures
• Effectively handles personnel problems
• Adaptable and flexible to change, committed to department growth and improvement
• Supervises the work of subordinates during emergency and routine work activities, maintaining discipline and respect
• Knowledge of the geography of the district including streets, water mains and fire hydrants
• Credible, enthusiastic, and confident
• All other duties assigned by the Fire Chief.
SELECTION GUIDELINES: (May include the following)
1. Receipt of formal application; review of application; driving record and background verification; oral interview; final selection; recommendation for approval by Montgomery County ESD6 Board of Commissioners; pre-employment physical with drugscreening.

ELIGIBLITY
External Candidate - the department will post for outside interest for a 21-day period. Candidates with interest must prove lateral credentials for internal eligibility.
• Lateral credentials are to be reviewed by professional development for approval
• Certifications missing from the requirement may be obtained within 24 months of promotion/appointment.
• External candidates must provide proof of 8 years combined experience between the ranks of FF and driver operator.
Internal Candidate - the department will post for internal interest for a 21-day period for those personnel that have served in the capacity of FF and/or Driver Operator for a period of 6 years or more.
• For those people that have not met time in their current rank to promote, a combination of their current rank plus the previous rank must equal 6 years of experience and have privileges of riding higher class in their current rank.
• Certifications missing from the requirement may be obtained within 24 months of
promotion/appointment.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE
Starting Salary - $94,223.54 – FY26/27 (This number includes FLSA guaranteed overtime)
